Look for the ENERGY STAR® Label When Shopping for House Windows in the Houston Area
If your house in or near Houston is due for new windows, an effective way to narrow down your search is to focus your attention on models that have earned the ENERGY STAR® certification label.
What is ENERGY STAR®?
ENERGY STAR® is a widely recognized consumer symbol for energy efficiency. Backed by the U.S. government, it provides simple and unbiased information regarding a product’s ability to help you save money and be kinder to the environment. As it relates to windows, the ENERGY STAR® label – if present – signifies that a model either meets or exceeds to the minimal standards for energy efficiency established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The performance ratings detailed on each label are as follows:
This measures the rate of heat transfer and indicates how well a window insulates.
SOLAR HEAT GAIN COEFFICIENT
This measure tells you how well a window blocks out heat caused by sunlight.
Measured in cubic feet of air passing through one square foot of window area per minute, air leakage measures the rate at which air passes through window joints.
The amount of light a window lets through is measured in visible transmittance, or VT.
This is a measure of how well a window is resistant to water build-up.
